TIDEWATER ART GALLERY

Russian Soviet Propaganda Posters Art Exhibition

STOCKTON, CA - The Tidewater Art Gallery will be presenting a new educational exhibition from November through December.  The exhibition will feature vintage propaganda posters from Russia and the Ukraine.  Local photographer Steve Pereira will reprint these vintage posters onto canvas for the show.  These posters come from his private collection and date between the 1970s-1980s.  Propaganda issues discussed on each poster highlight social concerns ranging from the children’s health and welfare, drug abuse, the environment, and world peace, among others.

“They were given to me from a longtime friend, Steve Allen from Stockton who now resides in Moscow” said Pereira. “I thought the graphic artwork was truly amazing and a great opportunity for the public to see the quality of art and subjects that were universally important in this world.”

“As cold war enemies,” said Pereira “I think it’s important to note how these posters show how we both had common concerns.”

Having worked as an photographer in Stockton for more than forty years, Pereira considers himself a “comprehensive photographer,” he was always ready to cover interesting assignments from documenting a South Pacific cruise on a forty-eight foot sailboat, to guiding a pilot to just the right place 10,000 in the sky to get the perfect place on a property for a foreign country’s ship coming in under the Golden Gate.

The exhibition will be open for free to the public on the 1st and 2nd floors at the San Joaquin County Administration Building, 44 North San Joaquin Street from November through December 2011.  An artist reception will be held Friday, November 18, 2011 from 5:30-7:30.
